About this service

Pediatric Prosthetics

Pediatric is a specialty, not a smaller-adult fitting. Children grow, change activities week to week, and have a different relationship with their device than adult patients. A pediatric prosthetic has to survive playground tumbles, accommodate 6–12 month growth cycles, and feel like a part of the kid’s body, not a medical apparatus.

We use modular componentry that grows with the patient, durable materials that handle hard wear, and design choices made together with the child and family. Color, style, and personalization aren’t cosmetic afterthoughts, for pediatric patients, they’re part of whether the device gets worn at all.

We coordinate closely with the child’s pediatric team, physiatrist, orthopedic surgeon, occupational and physical therapists, school therapists, so the fitting plan fits the broader care plan.

Technology & materials

Why our fittings work.

MEDIXA digital scanning is a particular win for pediatric patients, a 30-second handheld scan is far easier than plaster wrapping for kids who don’t want to sit still. Modular componentry and adjustable sockets extend the usable life of each device across multiple growth periods.

Frequently asked

Common questions about pediatric prosthetics.

How often will my child need a new device?
Most pediatric patients need a refit or new device every 6–12 months, depending on growth rate and activity. We schedule check-ins ahead of expected growth spurts so we’re never reacting to a device that’s suddenly too small.
At what age can fitting begin?
We’ve fit infants as young as six months for early standing/crawling, and provide first walking devices around 10–14 months. Earlier fitting often supports normal developmental milestones; we coordinate with the pediatric physiatrist on timing.
Does insurance cover pediatric prosthetics?
Most plans cover medically necessary pediatric devices. We file pre-authorizations and document medical necessity for growth-related refits. Florida Medicaid (and KidCare) covers pediatric P&O fittings.
Can my child be involved in choosing the look?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. Color, patterns, sleeve designs, decals: when kids feel ownership of how their device looks, they wear it more consistently and feel better about it.
